Wednesday's Word

Sermon Summary for Sunday, June 26th, 2016 | Brenda Worley

This Sunday's readings were all about Evangelism!   Now I know that is a word that makes us somewhat uncomfortable.   It simply means spreading the good news of God's love to everyone that has contact with us.

In the First Lesson, we are taught by Elisha's example that it is important to answer the call to follow.   We should do this with joy and celebration.   In the Second Lesson, Paul gives us two lists--one dark list of what being led by the Spirit is NOT and another, often called the "fruits of the Spirit," that is evidence of our living in the Light.  Most of us have the second list as our goal, but unfortunately,  still exhibit some items from the dark list.  We should strive to show others the Light by how we live, but it is a journey.

The Gospel reading finds Jesus and his disciples on their way to Jerusalem and being rejected by the Samaritans as they seek followers.  Jesus rebukes his disciples for wanting to punish those who reject them.  Others who are called seem to have other things they feel they need to handle before following.   Jesus makes it clear that we are to go when called and not look back.

Are you a follower?  Do you treat your waitress at Waffle House in a way that exhibits the fruits of the Spirit, even when you are desperate for a refill on your coffee?   Are you kind in traffic when someone is mistakenly in the wrong lane and needs over?  Do you ever think about who you might offend by that edgy Facebook post?   Remember,  actions speak louder than words.  " They will know we are Christians by our love."
