The Vocation of Sponsorship:
Being a Spiritual Friend to those Journeying
Toward Baptism or Confirmation
"When we talk about Initiation into Christ
Jesus,
we are entering into the storm center
of the universe." Aidan Kavanaugh
Within
the context of every baptism and confirmation, the congregation
responds to the question "will you support this person in his
life in Christ?" with the words, "I will with God's help."
The entire body of the faithful is the womb out of which life is
given to new Christians and to those who enter our congregation
seeking for a new way of expressing their faith.
And
yet this vocation of supporting those either new to the Christian
faith or new to the Anglican expression of Christian faith must
be enfleshed in individual members of the parish who are willing
to walk with and journey with those who have risked their spiritual
life by desiring to make their home with us. It is a substantial
commitment. It requires the sponsor to pray for the catechumen (in
the case of baptism) or the candidate (in the case of confirmation
or reception); a desire to accompany him or her to the weekly sessions;
and to spend time-sharing your life with them. When accepted in
a spirit of Christian fellowship there is nothing more rewarding
than strengthening the soul of a seeker or inquirer with your own
questions, your own searching, and your own yearning for God. It
is hoped that members of the parish will seek to discern their ministry
as sponsor. If you feel yourself called, please speak with the rector.
